A residual current device (RCD) is a safety device that can provide protection against electrocution or electrical fires by detecting and interrupting any leakage currents in the circuit. RCDs with a tripping current of 30 mA or less are now widely used in all types of electrical installation and provide valuable additional protection. 

Different RCD Types are available, however only Type B RCDs can detect and respond to smooth direct currents (DC), making them a better choice for heat pumps.

A Type B RCD should be used on any circuit supplying Vaillant heat pumps, this is due to the use of inverter technology. This requirement is highlighted in our manufacturer instructions. This takes into account the requirements of the wiring regulations to choose the correct RCD depending on their behaviour in the presence of DC components, frequencies and manufacturer’s instructions.

Earth leakage and the importance of frequency

Type B RCDs comply with BS 62423, which require safe operation under earth leakage conditions up to 1,000 Hz (1 kHz).
Vaillant requires a Type B RCD that is rated to at least 20 kHz, with a minimum trip threshold of 150 mA above 1 kHz.
Some Type B RCDs in the market cannot meet these requirements and trip when the heat pump is in operation, causing unnecessary downtime and frustration for the customer.

Introducing the type B “HP” RCD

Hager has launched a Type B RCD with additional functionality to allow correct operation for inverter driven heat pumps. This device has been called Type B HP to make it clear in the market that it is compatible with heat pumps. However, the device still meets the harmonized standard for Type B RCDs and remains as BS EN 62423. The Type B HP has been tested and validated to meet the characteristics required of 20 kHz or greater, with a minimum trip threshold of 150 mA above 1 kHz.
This new Type B HP RCD forms the basis of the three new accessories being launched as part of the Vaillant heat pump offering.
